US Calls for Stronger Asian Alliances, Warns on China and Iran at Singapore Security Forum
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has urged Asian allies to increase defence spending and strengthen military cooperation to counter China’s growing influence in the region, warning of “rightful alarm” over its rapid military expansion.
Speaking at a major security forum in Singapore, Hegseth said a stronger network of allies was essential to maintain regional stability and deter aggression, adding that no country should dominate the Indo-Pacific.
He stressed that the United States expects partners to contribute more to shared defence responsibilities, saying future security depends on collective investment rather than reliance on a single power.
On US-China relations, he said communication between the two militaries had improved, describing current ties as more stable compared to previous years, while acknowledging ongoing strategic tensions.
Hegseth also reiterated Washington’s position on Taiwan, stating that US arms sales policies remain unchanged and that future decisions would depend on presidential approval and bilateral relations.
On the Middle East, he said the United States remains prepared to take military action against Iran if diplomatic efforts fail, while continuing to pursue a negotiated solution.
The remarks come as global powers continue to navigate complex security challenges across both the Indo-Pacific and Middle East regions.
