MISSISSAUGA: Amid growing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, the federal government has announced C$7.5 billion in new and expanded support measures to protect Canadian businesses, workers, and export sectors from potential economic damage.

According to the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney, the purpose of this package is to provide immediate support to businesses, workers, and key sectors of the economy affected by U.S. tariffs.

During an important meeting held in Mississauga, detailed discussions were held on the current trade tensions between Canada and the United States, the challenges facing businesses, and the government support available to affected workers.

On the occasion, Federal Minister Rechie Valdez, Member of Parliament Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament Peter Fonseca, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, Member of Provincial Parliament Sheref Sabawy, and other leaders expressed the government’s commitment to Canadian businesses and workers.

According to the government, the $7.5 billion support package will particularly be used to support affected workers, small and medium-sized businesses, and export sectors.

Speaking with Mehboob Shaikh, Federal Minister Rechie Valdez said that Canada had made every possible effort to avoid a trade confrontation with the United States; however, the strong statements and actions by U.S. President Donald Trump cannot be ignored.

According to Rechie Valdez, intensive negotiations were held with the United States for a comprehensive trade agreement. However, some of the new conditions presented by the U.S. side at the final stage were not acceptable to Canada.

Meanwhile, MP Iqra Khalid described U.S. President Donald Trump’s orders to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America as ridiculous, making it clear that Canadians will continue to call it Lake Ontario.

Iqra Khalid said, “I joined Team Mississauga in announcing our current tariff support plan. Team Mississauga stands with Canadians. We will never leave anyone behind.”

She said that all Canadian residents, businesses, and workers have been assured that the government will support them in every possible way.

According to Iqra Khalid, in this period of uncertainty, Canada is standing strong while defending its dignity and remains committed to protecting its communities, families, and country.

The Canadian government has made it clear that its response to U.S. tariffs will not be limited to political statements.

According to the government’s announcement, retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25%, and up to 50% will be imposed on U.S. imports.

The official list includes more than 700 U.S. products. The new tariffs cover various sectors, including steel, aluminum, dairy products, household electrical appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, and electronics.

50% tariff will be imposed on some U.S. products, 25% on others, while selected goods will face 15% tariffs.

The close trade partnership between the United States and Canada, which has existed for decades, is once again facing a serious crisis.

Following strong statements and new tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump, Canada has also announced a strong retaliatory response, raising concerns that the trade war in North America could escalate further.

The biggest question now is: Will the two countries return to the negotiating table?

Or will the world’s two closest trading partners enter a long and costly economic war, with its effects potentially reaching businesses, workers, and ordinary consumers?

Canada has now sent a clear message: Despite trade pressure, Canada is prepared to defend its businesses, its workers, and its economic sovereignty.
