KARACHI: The city is facing a water shortfall of 54 million gallons per day after a technical fault disrupted electricity supply to the North East Karachi (NEK) Pumping Station, according to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

Officials said the power outage, caused by a fault in a main cable, affected pumping operations at key water supply facilities, leading to a partial disruption in water distribution across the city. Emergency arrangements were made to temporarily restore supply through alternative feeder connections, though full pumping capacity could not initially be achieved due to limited electrical support.

KWSC stated that the situation could worsen if the fault was not repaired promptly, potentially impacting water supply schedules in several areas. The utility has urged the power company to resolve the issue on an emergency basis to avoid further disruption.

However, the power utility later stated that electricity supply to the pumping station remained largely functional and that only some pumping motors were affected due to a cable fault, which has since been rectified. It added that power has now been fully restored to all pumping operations.

Authorities say monitoring is ongoing to ensure normalization of water supply across the city.
