US, UK and Australia Unveil Advanced Undersea Drone Payload Project Under AUKUS Pact

The United States, Australia and the United Kingdom have announced a new joint defence initiative to develop advanced payload systems for uncrewed underwater vehicles as part of their AUKUS security partnership.

The announcement was made by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth during a meeting with his British and Australian counterparts on the sidelines of a security forum in Singapore.

Officials said the project will focus on creating highly adaptable systems for undersea drones designed to enhance surveillance, operational capabilities and maritime security in contested waters.

The initiative falls under the second pillar of the AUKUS agreement, which emphasizes collaboration on advanced military technologies among the three countries.

British and Australian defence officials said the development will strengthen battlefield capabilities and improve protection of critical underwater infrastructure, including subsea communication cables.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerability of undersea infrastructure, which plays a crucial role in global internet connectivity and economic systems.

Officials noted that recent incidents involving damage to submarine cables in different regions have highlighted the strategic importance of safeguarding the seabed.

The AUKUS partnership continues to expand as member countries deepen cooperation on defence technology amid shifting security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
