Following recent progress in trade, investment, and diplomatic relations between Canada and Pakistan, another significant development is now emerging in the aviation sector one that could bring welcome news for the millions of Pakistanis who travel between the two countries.
Zara Airways, founded by Pakistani-Canadian entrepreneur Faqeer Bawar Hussain Bhikari, has officially submitted an application to launch non-stop flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
If all regulatory requirements and government approvals are successfully completed, Zara Airways could open a new chapter in direct air travel between Canada and Pakistan.
The airline initially proposed operating three weekly non-stop flights. However, according to the latest information, it is now seeking approval to operate five direct weekly flights to meet growing passenger demand.
Sources indicate that the airline plans to begin operations with Boeing 777 aircraft, with additional modern aircraft expected to join the fleet as passenger demand increases.
Zara Airways says it is committed to delivering modern technology, international safety standards, and an exceptional travel experience. As part of that vision, the airline plans to assemble a world-class team of experienced pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and ground operations staff.
To strengthen its operations in Pakistan, the airline has also finalized a partnership with Shaheen Airport Services (SAPS) for ground handling, operational support, and airport services.
In addition, KN Aviation has been appointed as the airline’s General Sales Agent (GSA) to enhance ticket sales, customer service, and support for travel partners.
According to Chief Executive Officer Syed Quli, flight operations will commence only after obtaining all required regulatory approvals and the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC).
At present, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is the only carrier operating direct flights between Canada and Pakistan. If Zara Airways receives approval, it will become the first new airline in several years to provide direct services on the Canada–Pakistan route, introducing long-awaited competition.
Aviation experts note that increased competition between airlines generally benefits passengers by creating more competitive fares, offering greater travel choices, improving service quality, and making travel easier and more convenient for business travellers, students, and families.
For years, the Pakistani community in Canada has been calling for more direct flight options, affordable fares, and improved travel services. If Zara Airways’ proposal is approved, it could not only strengthen air connectivity between Canada and Pakistan but also boost trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
The proposal comes at a time when Canada–Pakistan relations have shown renewed momentum following the recent visit of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to Pakistan. The proposed launch of Zara Airways is being viewed by many as another positive step in the growing cooperation between the two nations.
