A new chapter in European cricket has begun with the launch of the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL), bringing six city-based franchises from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands together in a landmark cross-border T20 competition.
The tournament, running from August 26 to September 20, 2026, is designed to combine Europe’s emerging cricket talent with some of the biggest names in international cricket. The opening phase is being staged in Voorburg, Netherlands, before the competition moves to Malahide, Ireland, for its later stages and the final.
The six franchises Belfast Wolves, Dublin Guardians, Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Glasgow Cosmic, Amsterdam Flames and Rotterdam Dockers — represent three cricket-playing nations united under one professional franchise competition.
The ETPL has immediately attracted international attention with a remarkable collection of established cricket stars.
Among the leading names involved are Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Heinrich Klaasen and others.
The presence of such international stars is expected to give the competition global visibility while providing European players with an opportunity to compete alongside some of the world’s finest cricketers.
The opening fixture itself carries considerable star power, with the Rotterdam Dockers facing the Amsterdam Flames in Voorburg.
What makes the ETPL particularly significant is its cross-border structure.
The league is being run in collaboration with Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association, creating a professional platform that connects three established European cricket nations. The competition is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Each franchise must include at least seven local players from Ireland, Scotland or the Netherlands, along with at least one player from another European nation outside those three boards. The structure is intended to ensure that European talent remains at the heart of the competition rather than being overshadowed by overseas stars.
The ETPL has also attracted a remarkable group of personalities from the world of cricket and entertainment. Indian actor, film producer and sports entrepreneur Abhishek Bachchan is a co-owner of the league alongside Rules Sport Tech. The league’s co-founders include Saurav Banerjee, Priyanka Kaul and Dhiraj Malhotra.
Former cricket legends have also entered the ownership structure. Australia’s Steve Waugh is involved with Amsterdam, while Rahul Dravid is a co-owner of the Dublin Guardians. Other prominent former international players associated with franchises include Faf du Plessis, Jonty Rhodes, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Gayle and Kyle Mills.
Their involvement has given the new league an extraordinary blend of sporting credibility, international experience and commercial ambition.
Beyond entertainment and franchise rivalry, the ETPL carries a larger ambition: to accelerate the development of cricket across Europe.
The league’s model places European players alongside international stars, allowing emerging cricketers to gain exposure to elite coaching, high-pressure T20 competition and international-standard teammates.

From India and Australia to the Caribbean, Pakistan, South Africa, the United States and the Gulf, T20 cricket has developed into a powerful sporting and entertainment industry.
Europe, however, has remained one of the world’s major untapped cricket markets.
The ETPL is now attempting to change that. Its six-city model connecting Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh gives the competition a distinctly European identity while creating a pathway for cricket to reach new audiences.
