Federal Government Expands Online Passport Renewal to All Eligible Adult Canadians and Removes Daily Application Limits
Report by Mehboob Ali Shaikh
The Government of Canada has taken another major step toward modernizing public services by fully expanding online passport renewal to all eligible adult Canadian citizens across the country. At the same time, the federal government has eliminated the previous daily limit on the number of online applications, allowing eligible Canadians to apply at any time.
The initiative is part of Canada’s Digital-First Government Strategy, aimed at delivering public services that are more convenient, secure, and efficient for Canadians.
Under the new system, eligible applicants can complete their passport renewal entirely online by submitting their application form, required information, a digitally certified passport photo taken by a commercial photographer, and the applicable fee.
Once an application has been submitted, applicants can monitor its progress through the IRCC Portal using real-time status updates, reducing the need for repeated office visits or lengthy telephone wait times.
The new service means that thousands of Canadians will no longer need to visit Service Canada Centres, mail paper documents, or wait in long lines simply to renew their passports.
While traditional in-person and mail-in application options will continue to be available, the online service offers a faster and more convenient alternative for many Canadians.
To apply online, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a valid blue Canadian passport.
- Have received their current passport when they were 16 years of age or older.
- Hold a passport that was issued for five or ten years.
- Have a passport issued within the past 15 years.
- Have both a residential and mailing address in Canada.
The federal government has also clarified that photos taken with a mobile phone or scanned printed photographs will not be accepted.
Applicants must upload the original digital passport photo provided by a commercial photographer who captured the image in person.
The government has established a 20-business-day service standard for online passport renewals, excluding mailing time.
If the processing of a complete application exceeds 30 business days, applicants may be eligible for a refund of the passport or travel document fee, provided the required conditions are met.
According to the federal government, eligible refunds will be issued automatically.
The government has warned that once an online renewal application is submitted, the applicant’s current passport is immediately cancelled and can no longer be used for travel.
For Canadians who need to travel within the next 20 business days, the government recommends applying in person through Express or Urgent Passport Services instead of using the online renewal system.
The new online service is expected to be especially valuable for residents of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where Service Canada Centres often experience heavy demand, long wait times, parking challenges, and crowded offices.
With the new digital platform, Canadians can complete their passport renewal from home, the office, or virtually anywhere, while seniors, people with mobility challenges, and residents of remote communities will also benefit from easier access to passport services.
According to the federal government, the nationwide expansion of online passport renewals represents more than just a new convenience—it is a key part of Canada’s broader effort to modernize public services and build a more efficient, accessible, and citizen-focused government.
Officials expect the initiative to reduce pressure on Service Canada Centres, significantly cut paperwork, shorten waiting times, and enable millions of Canadians to access passport services more quickly, conveniently, and confidently than ever before.
