Canada Announces Major Investment in National AI Health Data Platform
Canada has unveiled a major investment in healthcare innovation, allocating $100 million to expand a national health data platform designed to accelerate artificial intelligence development and medical research.
The initiative, known as VITAL, will connect hospital data across multiple provinces, creating one of the world’s largest health data networks. The platform is expected to provide near real-time access to healthcare information, helping researchers develop advanced AI tools, improve clinical trials and strengthen healthcare services.
Initially linking hospitals in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, the project is expected to expand nationwide, with several other provinces and territories expressing interest in joining the network.
Officials say the platform will support medical research, disease surveillance, healthcare planning and the development of new technologies while maintaining strict privacy, security and ethical safeguards. The system will allow health data to remain under provincial control while enabling secure analysis across jurisdictions.
The project also includes an Indigenous-governed health information stream aimed at improving health data access and research opportunities for Indigenous communities while ensuring data sovereignty and local oversight.
Over the next five years, the platform will focus on expanding infrastructure, improving access to health data for researchers and supporting innovation in Canada’s healthcare and life sciences sectors.
