Israel Warns US of Critical Shortage of Missile Interceptors Amid Iran Conflict

Israel has warned the United States that it is facing a critical shortage of ballistic missile interceptors as its ongoing conflict with Iran continues, according to a report citing US officials.

The report indicated that Israel had already been experiencing a shortage of interceptors before the latest escalation, after expending a significant number during previous clashes with Iran last summer. Since then, its long-range air defence systems have come under increasing pressure due to continued Iranian missile attacks.

Officials said the situation has become more challenging as Iran has reportedly begun incorporating cluster munitions into its missiles, a development that could accelerate the depletion of Israel’s interceptor stockpiles.

A US official stated that Washington had been aware of Israel’s limited interceptor capacity for several months and had anticipated the possibility of shortages. The official added that the United States currently does not face a similar shortage of its own interceptors.

However, it remains unclear whether Washington will supply additional interceptors to Israel, as such a move could place further pressure on US domestic reserves.

Despite the shortage, Israel still has other defensive capabilities, including the use of fighter jets to counter incoming threats. Nevertheless, missile interceptors remain one of the most effective tools against long-range attacks, while the Iron Dome defence system is primarily designed to intercept shorter-range rockets.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States possesses a “virtually unlimited” stockpile of munitions, though analysts have previously suggested that American reserves may be lower than desired.
