The PML-N-led federal government on Thursday removed Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori and appointed senior party leader Syed Nehal Hashmi as his replacement, sparking a strong reaction from coalition partner MQM-P. The party criticized the decision, saying it had not been consulted and calling it a “grave mistake,” while vowing to determine its next course of action. Tessori described his removal as a form of “punishment.”

The change was announced by the Prime Minister’s Office following a meeting between PM Shehbaz Sharif and Hashmi. The prime minister subsequently forwarded a summary to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval. Deputy PM Ishaq Dar and political adviser Rana Sanaullah were present at the meeting.

Later in the evening, President Zardari approved Hashmi’s appointment under Articles 48 and 101 of the Constitution. The presidency confirmed that Hashmi would take his oath before the chief justice of the Sindh High Court. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated Hashmi, expressing hope for stronger coordination between the federal and provincial governments.Outgoing Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori suggested that his removal from office could be linked to his initiatives, including the Gul Plaza issue and the ‘Karachi Bachao Conference’. Speaking to the media at Governor House, Tessori said he knew who was behind the decision but chose to remain “politically silent in the larger national interest.” He emphasized that he would continue advocating for Karachi’s issues, even after leaving office.

Tessori congratulated incoming governor Syed Nehal Hashmi, urging him to continue ongoing initiatives, particularly programs for students and community welfare. He thanked the business community, religious leaders, minority groups, and the Governor House staff for their support during his tenure. Tessori also acknowledged the media for helping bring recognition to the Governor House’s initiatives. On his political future, he described himself as a courageous advocate for Karachi who would continue raising his voice for the city’s issues.

The decision sparked strong criticism from MQM-P, which said it had not been consulted. Senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar called the move a “grave mistake,” alleging it was made under pressure to appease influential feudal elements and warning that it could affect MQM-P’s continued participation in the federal government. The party stressed that it learned about Tessori’s removal through the media and vowed to announce its response soon, asserting that ignoring the decision could harm its political credibility.
