Special Payments Begin Today
A Major Cost-of-Living Relief for Canadians

Canada’s federal Liberal government has launched a significant financial relief program aimed at helping citizens affected by the rising cost of living. Starting today, special additional payments are being deposited into the bank accounts of approximately 12 million eligible Canadians across the country.
The initiative is part of the “Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit” program introduced by Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this year in January, with the goal of reducing the impact of rising food and everyday living costs.
For several years, low-income Canadian families have received quarterly financial support through the GST/HST Credit program. The government has now expanded and strengthened this support by transforming it into the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.
According to experts, the objective of this change is not only to provide immediate financial assistance but also to strengthen Canadians’ purchasing power over the long term.
According to the federal government, all citizens who meet the required income threshold based on their 2024 income tax return will qualify for the payment.
Eligible individuals do not need to submit any separate application or form. Payments will be issued automatically through direct deposit into bank accounts or mailed as cheques.
The amount of payment will depend on family size and income level. Some examples include:
- Single adult (without children): up to $267
- Couple with two children: up to $533
This special payment represents an additional 50% top-up of the annual benefit.
The government has not limited itself to one-time assistance and has also introduced a long-term plan.
Beginning in July 2026, quarterly payments will increase by 25%, and this increase will continue over the next five years.
Government sources say the goal is to provide financial protection for low- and middle-income families during ongoing inflation and rising housing costs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his government is strongly focused on improving affordability and making everyday life more manageable for Canadians.
The government argues that rising costs of groceries, rent, utility bills, and other essential expenses have placed growing pressure on household budgets, leading to the introduction of this new program.
Experts say several organizations working in food assistance and social support have welcomed the initiative.
Although experts note that the program will not solve all inflation-related challenges, they believe it could make a meaningful difference for millions of low-income families by helping cover food, medications, and essential bills.
Over the past few years, global inflation, supply chain disruptions, housing pressures, and high interest rates have affected not only Canada but many developed economies around the world.
Under these circumstances, the federal government’s initiative is being viewed as an important though temporary relief measure for millions of Canadians facing continuously rising daily living expenses.
