TORONTO: In a significant effort to ease the financial pressure faced by Canadians amid ongoing inflation and rising living costs, the federal Liberal government has launched a major affordability initiative that will provide financial relief to approximately 12 million eligible Canadians.

Beginning today, special supplemental payments are being deposited directly into the bank accounts of eligible recipients across the country under Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly introduced Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, a program designed to help Canadians manage the increasing cost of food and basic necessities.

The benefit represents one of the federal government’s most substantial affordability measures this year and is aimed primarily at supporting low- and middle-income households struggling with higher grocery bills, housing costs, utility expenses, and other essential living expenditures.

New Benefit Replaces Traditional GST Credit

For decades, eligible Canadians received quarterly support through the GST/HST Credit program. The federal government has now expanded and modernized that assistance by introducing the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which provides enhanced support for families facing persistent cost-of-living challenges.

Government officials say the revamped program is intended not only to deliver immediate financial assistance but also to strengthen the long-term purchasing power of Canadians as inflation continues to affect household budgets.

Automatic Payments for Eligible Canadians

According to federal authorities, Canadians who qualify based on their 2024 income tax returns will automatically receive the benefit without the need for a separate application.

Payments are being issued through:

  • Direct deposit to registered bank accounts; or
  • Mailed cheques for recipients not enrolled in direct deposit.

Officials emphasized that eligible Canadians do not need to complete any additional forms or paperwork to receive the funds.

Payment Amounts Based on Family Size and Income

The amount each household receives varies according to income level and family composition.

Government examples indicate that:

  • A single adult with no children may receive up to $267;
  • A couple with two children may receive up to $533.

The special payment represents a 50 percent enhancement to the annual benefit amount available under the program.

Long-Term Affordability Plan Announced

In addition to the immediate relief payments, the federal government has outlined a broader affordability strategy intended to provide ongoing support over the coming years.

Starting in July 2026, quarterly benefit payments are scheduled to increase by 25 percent, with further annual increases planned over the next five years.

Government officials say the objective is to provide greater financial stability and purchasing power for Canadians facing continued inflationary pressures and high housing costs.

Carney Government Prioritizing Affordability

Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly identified affordability as one of his government’s top priorities.

Federal officials note that rising grocery prices, housing expenses, transportation costs, and utility bills have placed considerable strain on household finances across Canada. The new benefit program is intended to offer meaningful assistance to families and individuals struggling to keep pace with these rising costs.

“The goal is to ensure Canadians receive practical support when they need it most,” government sources said.

Experts Welcome Additional Support

Organizations working in poverty reduction, food security, and community support services have welcomed the government’s latest affordability initiative.

While experts acknowledge that no single program can fully offset inflation-related challenges, many believe the additional payments will help millions of Canadians cover essential expenses such as groceries, prescription medications, transportation, and household bills.

Advocates say the measure could provide meaningful relief for vulnerable households facing difficult financial choices amid elevated living costs.

Economic Challenges Continue

Canada, like many countries around the world, has faced economic pressures resulting from global inflation, supply chain disruptions, housing shortages, and higher interest rates over the past several years.

Against this backdrop, the federal government’s latest affordability initiative is being viewed as an important source of support for millions of Canadians working to manage rising expenses while maintaining financial stability.

As payments begin reaching bank accounts nationwide, many Canadians are expected to welcome the additional assistance as they continue navigating the challenges of an uncertain economic environment.
