MUMBAI: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92 after a brief illness.
She was admitted to a hospital in South Mumbai following a chest infection and fatigue. Her funeral will be held later in the day, while fans will be allowed to pay their last respects at her residence.
Widely regarded as one of the most versatile voices in Indian music, Asha Bhosle’s career spanned several decades, beginning in the 1940s and reaching its peak through the 1950s and 1960s. She gained prominence with films like Naya Daur and went on to collaborate with leading composers, delivering numerous memorable songs.
Known for her ability to adapt across genres, she excelled in cabaret numbers, ghazals, pop, classical, and devotional music. Her voice became closely associated with iconic film performances, particularly those featuring Helen.
She also received critical acclaim for her work in films such as Umrao Jaan and Ijazat, earning major awards during her career. Even in later years, she remained active, contributing to projects like Rangeela and Lagaan.
Over her lifetime, she recorded thousands of songs in more than 20 languages and received numerous honours, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Her passing marks the end of an era in South Asian music, leaving behind a vast and influential legacy.
