BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for accelerated development of a modern energy system aimed at strengthening China’s energy security amid global volatility in energy markets.

Speaking at a policy meeting reported by state media, Xi stressed the need to advance planning and construction of a diversified energy structure, including hydropower, nuclear energy, and large-scale renewable projects. He also urged the safe and orderly expansion of nuclear power and greater focus on ecological protection.

While he did not directly refer to the ongoing Iran conflict, the remarks come at a time when tensions in the Middle East have contributed to fluctuations in global energy prices.

Xi highlighted that China must adapt to shifting global energy trends and continue implementing its national energy security strategy, according to state broadcaster reports.

Analysts note that China is relatively insulated from global oil shocks due to its heavy reliance on coal, which makes up more than half of its energy consumption, along with substantial oil reserves and diversified import routes.

The Chinese leader also reiterated the importance of balancing coal with cleaner energy sources, describing coal as a foundational component of the country’s power system while emphasizing continued investment in wind, solar, and other low-carbon technologies.

China remains the world’s largest coal consumer and producer of coal-based electricity, but it has also expanded renewable energy capacity at a rapid pace in recent years as part of its long-term transition strategy.

State media also reported ongoing major infrastructure projects, including large hydropower and high-altitude solar developments, as part of efforts to strengthen energy security and support economic growth.
