Canada has unveiled a new $3.8 billion national strategy aimed at protecting and restoring the country’s natural environment, strengthening conservation efforts, and expanding protected land and marine areas.

The plan focuses on safeguarding ecosystems, improving environmental management, and supporting Indigenous-led conservation initiatives across the country. Authorities say the strategy is designed to address rising threats from climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and extreme weather events.

As part of the initiative, Canada aims to significantly expand protected land and ocean areas over the coming years, including new national parks, marine conservation zones, and urban parks. The government has also set long-term targets to conserve a larger share of the country’s land and waters by 2030.

The strategy includes major investments in wildlife recovery, marine protection, and freshwater security, along with efforts to restore vulnerable fish populations and remove harmful waste from oceans.

Officials also announced plans to improve environmental planning and decision-making through better mapping systems, data tools, and assessment processes to balance development with conservation.

In addition, the government will explore new financing models to attract private investment for environmental protection and strengthen long-term sustainability efforts.

Leaders described the initiative as a comprehensive effort to protect Canada’s natural heritage while supporting economic development and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.
