A Canada Soccer jersey exchange event in Toronto drew large crowds after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with fans lining up for a chance to take part in a symbolic campaign celebrating Canadian identity in football.

The event invited supporters to bring their Italy jerseys and receive a Canada jersey in return as part of a promotional initiative linked to the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. However, organizers ultimately allowed participants to keep their original jerseys, turning the exchange into a gesture of inclusion rather than replacement.

More than 100 fans attended the event outside a popular Toronto café, with all available jerseys distributed within minutes. Some attendees expressed surprise and emotional reactions after learning they could retain their Italy shirts while also receiving Canadian gear.

Participants included Italian-Canadian supporters as well as long-time Italy fans who said they still appreciated the opportunity to engage with Canada’s national team ahead of the tournament. Several fans noted divided loyalties, saying they supported both teams in different ways.

The campaign, described by organizers as an effort to celebrate Canada’s diversity and growing football culture, received mixed reactions online. While many praised the inclusive message, others criticized the concept as disrespectful toward long-standing international fan identities.

Despite the debate, organizers said the goal was to encourage engagement rather than replace existing loyalties, highlighting Canada’s multicultural fan base. Remaining fans were later given additional merchandise as supplies ran out.
