LAHORE – The HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 is set to begin on March 26 under unprecedented circumstances, with several international players arriving in Lahore to join their respective franchises for the tournament.

Running until May 3, this 11th edition features eight teams competing across 44 matches. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, have triggered a severe fuel crisis, prompting significant adjustments to the league’s schedule and operations.

Key international arrivals include Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza for Lahore Qalandars, Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne for debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen, fast bowler Riley Meredith, Sri Lankan wicket-keeper-batter Kusal Perera, and New Zealand stars Devon Conway and Mark Chapman. Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, Nahid Rana, and Parvez Hossain Emon are expected to join shortly, with officials anticipating nearly all foreign players to be present by Tuesday night.

In response to the fuel shortage and energy conservation directives, the PCB has condensed the tournament to two venues—Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and Karachi—each hosting 22 matches. Initially planned across six cities, including Faisalabad and Peshawar, the revised format also includes matches behind closed doors, with the opening ceremony cancelled as part of austerity measures. The fuel crisis has led to nationwide restrictions, including school closures and work-from-home policies.

The tournament opens with defending champions Lahore Qalandars facing Hyderabad Kingsmen, one of the two new franchises added this season. Owned by American-Pakistani entrepreneur Fawad Sarwar, Hyderabad Kingsmen bring fresh competition to the league.

A high-calibre panel of match officials has been appointed for PSL 11. Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson, from the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, will make his PSL debut, bringing prior experience from four Tests and three T20Is officiated in Pakistan. The umpiring team includes ICC Elite Panel members Ahsan Raza (Pakistan), Christopher Gaffaney (New Zealand), Allahudien Paleker (South Africa), and Alexander Wharf (England), supported by Bangladeshi Sharfuddoula Saikat and New Zealander Chris Brown, with Paleker and Saikat debuting in the league.

Local umpires include Asif Yaqoob, Rashid Riaz, Faisal Khan Aafreedi, Nasir Hussain, Zulfiqar Jan, Abdul Muqeet, Alay Haider, Imran Jawed, and Tariq Rasheed. Roshan Mahanama, a regular PSL match referee since 2017, returns as head referee for the opener, extending his record of officiating 71 PSL matches.

The adjustments highlight the league’s resilience amid external challenges, as organizers aim to deliver a high-quality tournament despite logistical and operational constraints.
