ISLAMABAD: United States Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington failed to reach an agreement with Iran after 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad, stating that Tehran “chose not to accept” the American terms.

Speaking after the talks, Vance said the discussions were extensive but did not result in a breakthrough, despite what he described as good-faith efforts by both sides.

He praised Pakistan’s leadership for hosting and facilitating the negotiations, saying the outcome was not due to any shortcomings on Pakistan’s part.

According to Vance, the main point of contention remained Iran’s nuclear programme, with Washington seeking a long-term commitment that Tehran would not pursue nuclear weapons or the capability to develop them.

He said the United States had presented what it called its “final and best offer” after making clear its red lines and areas of flexibility during the talks.

Vance added that multiple issues were discussed, including frozen Iranian assets, but significant differences remained between the two sides.

He also said the US administration, including President Donald Trump and the national security team, remained closely involved throughout the negotiations.

Despite the breakdown, Vance maintained that the United States had approached the talks in good faith and described the outcome as more disadvantageous for Iran than for Washington.
