At least 70 people were killed and dozens injured in a violent gang attack in Haiti’s Artibonite region, according to rights groups, significantly higher than initial official estimates.

The assault began early Sunday in rural communities, where armed attackers stormed the area, set homes on fire, and continued the violence into the following day. Authorities reported multiple casualties, while several residents were forced to flee.

Thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the attack, with many seeking safety after their homes were destroyed.

Security forces launched an operation in response, but difficulties in accessing the المنطقة slowed their advance. By the time officials arrived, attackers had already fled, leaving widespread destruction behind.

Dozens of houses were burned, and the injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities. Authorities have begun efforts to track down those responsible.

The region has witnessed escalating violence in recent years, with armed groups expanding their influence beyond urban centres, contributing to rising casualties and large-scale displacement.
