White House National Security Council Undergoes Staff Reshuffle

A senior White House official overseeing European and Russian affairs is set to depart in the coming days as part of a broader restructuring within the National Security Council (NSC), according to sources familiar with the matter.

The official, Charles McLaughlin, currently senior director for European and Russian affairs, is expected to return to the National Defense University as his temporary assignment concludes. His departure comes amid internal personnel changes that are reportedly increasing the influence of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s allies within the NSC, where Rubio is also serving as acting national security adviser.

The reshuffle has raised attention among European partners, who are closely watching shifts in US foreign policy direction, particularly regarding relations with Russia and NATO allies. Some officials have expressed concern over Washington’s evolving approach, although others have described outgoing staff members as professional and balanced in their roles.

The changes are part of a wider reorganization of the NSC, which has seen several departures and reassignments in recent weeks. Additional staffing adjustments are reportedly expected in the near future as the administration continues to reshape its national security structure.
