PARIS: Former champion Iga Swiatek’s French Open campaign came to an unexpected end after a straight-sets defeat to 15th seed Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.
Kostyuk secured a 7-5, 6-1 victory to reach her first French Open quarter-final, continuing her impressive form on clay this season. The result marks one of the tournament’s biggest upsets and ends Swiatek’s bid for another Roland Garros title.
The Ukrainian will now face compatriot Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals after Svitolina advanced with a comeback win over Belinda Bencic.
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev moved into the next round with a comfortable victory, while veteran Sorana Cirstea reached the French Open quarter-finals for the first time in 17 years. Rising star Mirra Andreeva also progressed and will meet Cirstea in the last eight.
With several top contenders already eliminated, the tournament is set to crown new champions in both the men’s and women’s singles events.
