A Lahore sessions court has ruled in favour of singer Ali Zafar in a defamation case against fellow artist Meesha Shafi, ordering her to pay Rs5 million in damages.
The court held that public statements made in 2018 were defamatory and damaging to Zafar’s reputation. It ruled that the allegations were not proven and did not meet legal standards for public interest claims.
The judgment also restrained Shafi from making or publishing further remarks regarding the allegations across any media platform.
The long-running case, which began in 2018, involved extensive hearings and witness testimonies over several years. Both parties are expected to pursue further legal options following the verdict.
The court has directed payment of the compensation at a later hearing date.
