By Mehboob Ali Shaikh ( Brampton, Ontario Canada ) : At a time when Canadians are grappling with rising costs and global uncertainty, the federal government says Budget 2025 is charting a clear path forward—one grounded in targeted investment, fiscal responsibility, and community impact. That message was at the center of a media roundtable hosted by Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton–Chinguacousy Park and President of the Treasury Board of Canada, where he outlined how the latest federal budget aims to strengthen the economy, improve affordability, and deliver tangible results for families and communities across the country.

Addressing journalists, MP Ali emphasized that Budget 2025 is not a one-size-fits-all plan, but a focused strategy designed to respond to real challenges facing Canadians today—particularly housing affordability, cost-of-living pressures, and economic growth.

Tackling Housing and Affordability

Housing emerged as a central theme of the discussion. MP Ali highlighted new measures to reduce the cost of building homes and purpose-built rental units, including enhanced GST relief aimed at accelerating construction and increasing supply. These investments are about making housing more attainable,” Ali noted, pointing to the growing demand in rapidly expanding communities like Brampton. “By lowering construction costs, we’re helping bring more homes to market and easing pressure on renters and first-time buyers.

Building a Stronger Economy

Budget 2025 also prioritizes major projects and economic growth, with new investments to strengthen federal capacity, reduce regulatory delays, and attract private-sector capital. According to Ali, these steps are essential to creating good-paying jobs while ensuring Canada remains competitive in a changing global economy.Economic growth doesn’t happen by accident, he said. It requires smart planning, efficient processes, and partnerships that unlock private investment while protecting the public interest.

Supporting Canada’s Defenders

Another significant pillar of the budget is support for the Canadian Armed Forces. New funding will modernize defence capabilities, improve support for military personnel and their families, and reinforce Canada’s security commitments at home and abroad. Our service members deserve the tools, resources, and support they need,” Ali said. “This investment reflects our responsibility to those who serve and protect Canada.

Relief for Families, Responsible Finances

To help Canadians manage day-to-day affordability pressures, Budget 2025 includes targeted cost-of-living relief, such as enhancements to GST rebates and benefits for families with children. At the same time, Ali underscored the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, stressing that long-term growth and prudent spending go hand in hand.Responsible budgeting is not just about numbers—it’s about trust,” he said. “Canadians expect their government to invest wisely while safeguarding the country’s financial future.

Local Engagement, National Vision

Beyond the budget measures, MP Ali highlighted his continued engagement with local residents and official language minority communities, reinforcing the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusive growth.

As the roundtable concluded, Ali framed Budget 2025 as a forward-looking plan—one that balances immediate relief with long-term investment.Budget 2025 is about making smart, targeted investments that strengthen our economy and support Canadians where it matters most,” he said. “It’s about building a stronger, more secure Canada—not just for today, but for the generations to come. For communities and for Canadians nationwide, the government’s message is clear: investing in the future remains a national priority.
